Google vs ChatGPT: How B2B Buyers Search Differently
The google vs chatgpt question comes up in almost every B2B marketing review we sit in. Usually someone has tried ChatGPT for a supplier search, liked the answer, and now wants to know whether their Google rankings still matter. Short answer: they do, but they are no longer the whole picture. Google still handles the bulk of commercial research, while ChatGPT increasingly shapes the shortlist before a buyer ever opens a search results page. Understanding how those two channels split is the difference between being found and being skipped.
Two different starting points
On Google, your buyer types a fragment. They refine it. They open tabs. On ChatGPT, they describe a situation in a sentence or two and expect a synthesized answer with sources. That difference in input shapes everything downstream: what content gets surfaced, how it is formatted, and how quickly a brand can appear.
In our experience running B2B programs, most Google queries from industrial buyers run a few words (product name, spec, country), while ChatGPT prompts usually run a full sentence or more, often with context like application, volume and delivery constraints. We treat that as a working pattern, not a measured law. It varies by category, by language and by how technical the buyer is.
Query patterns: fragments vs full briefs
Google rewards pages that match a keyword and satisfy an intent fast. ChatGPT rewards pages that answer a question completely enough to be quoted. Those are not the same page, though one page can serve both if it is structured well.
Consider a pump manufacturer with 40 product pages and no FAQ. On Google, those pages can rank for model numbers and spec queries. In ChatGPT, the same pages often go uncited because there is no self-contained explanation of what the pump does, where it fits, or how it compares. The model has nothing clean to lift.
This is where the seo vs ai search optimization debate usually gets muddled. Classic SEO is about ranking a URL. AI search optimization is about being the source an answer is built from. Same site, different extraction layer. You can rank well and still be invisible in AI answers, and you can be cited in ChatGPT without holding page one for the head term.

Intent: research, shortlist, decision
Google still owns the early discovery phase for most B2B categories. Buyers search broadly, compare options, and land on category pages, buying guides and comparison articles. ChatGPT tends to enter later, when the buyer already knows roughly what they need and wants a shortlist with reasoning.
That does not mean ChatGPT is only a late-stage tool. For niche technical questions (a specific material grade, a compliance angle, a sizing calculation), buyers increasingly start in ChatGPT because it saves them from wading through ten tabs. Google remains better for local intent, price checks and anything where the buyer wants to see ten options at once.
Answer formats: what each channel rewards
Google's documentation is clear that helpful, people-first content tends to perform, and that structured data helps search engines understand a page. In practice, ranking pages usually combine a clear H1, scannable subheads, and enough depth to satisfy the query. ChatGPT, per OpenAI's published help documentation, answers either from live web search or from knowledge stored in the model without web access. Only the first of those is something you can influence today.
When ChatGPT does retrieve, it favors pages that state a fact plainly, attribute it, and keep the answer in one paragraph rather than scattering it across five sections. That is a formatting difference, not a quality difference. A page can be excellent and still unquotable if the key sentence is buried.
Citation behavior: links vs mentions
Google citations are links. ChatGPT citations are mentions, sometimes with a link, sometimes just a source name. That changes how you measure success. Search Console will not show you ChatGPT citations. You need to check them manually in ChatGPT search mode, not logged in, and screenshot the result.
In one RAGSEO client program (client anonymized), a lifting equipment manufacturer saw AI-engine-driven inquiries reach 186, which was 35% of all inquiries; 62% of those came from Europe and North America with a 28% higher conversion rate than traditional channels; the brand consistently ranked in the top 3 AI-generated answers for core queries; after the Google AI algorithm update in March 2024 the citation rate stayed stable and rose 15% month-on-month; before the project the brand appeared in less than 1% of AI-generated results. That is one client's monitored data, not a universal benchmark.
Side-by-side comparison
| Dimension | ChatGPT | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical query shape | Short keyword fragments, often refined over several searches | Full-sentence prompts with context and constraints |
| Primary intent | Discovery, comparison, local, price checks | Shortlisting, technical explanation, synthesis |
| What gets surfaced | Ranked URLs with snippets and rich results | Generated answer with a small set of cited sources |
| Citation format | Clickable link in results | Mention or link inside the answer text |
| Measurement | Search Console, Analytics, rank trackers | Manual checks in ChatGPT search mode, screenshots |
| Content that performs | Keyword-aligned pages with clear structure and internal links | Self-contained, quotable paragraphs with definitions and steps |
Neither column wins outright. The table just shows where each channel puts its weight.
How to cover both channels without doubling your workload
The practical move is to make your existing content extractable. Most B2B sites already have the raw material: product pages, case studies, spec sheets, sales emails. The work is structuring it so Google can rank it and ChatGPT can quote it.
- Audit your top 20 pages for quotability. Look for a 60-word paragraph that defines the product, the problem it solves, or the decision criteria. If it is missing, write one.
- Add FAQ blocks to product and category pages. Real buyer questions, answered in two to three sentences each. These feed both Google's People Also Ask and AI retrieval.
- Mark up what you can. Schema.org types like Product, FAQPage and Organization help search engines parse your page. They do not guarantee citations, but they remove ambiguity.
- Keep LCP at or under 2.5 seconds. Slow pages get crawled less and quoted less. This is a baseline, not a differentiator.
- Publish across authoritative platforms. A Medium post or an industry-site article that restates your core explanation gives AI engines a second source to corroborate.
- Track both channels monthly. Search Console for Google, manual ChatGPT checks for AI citations. Compare which queries move where.

Where each channel still wins
ChatGPT is not better than Google for every B2B niche. For high-volume, low-consideration purchases, Google's speed and breadth are hard to beat. For local suppliers, Google Maps and local packs still dominate. For regulated categories where buyers need to see a certification page or a physical address, Google's link-based results give more reassurance.
ChatGPT wins when the buyer has a complex problem and wants a reasoned answer, not a list. It also wins in early research for categories the buyer does not yet have vocabulary for. If your product solves a problem the buyer cannot name, ChatGPT is often where they describe it first.
The measurement gap
Google gives you Search Console. ChatGPT gives you screenshots. That asymmetry is uncomfortable but manageable. Our working rule is to check a fixed set of 10 to 20 queries in ChatGPT search mode once a week, not logged in, and log which sources get cited. Over a quarter, patterns show up: which pages get quoted, which competitors appear, which query types you are missing.
In our programs, citation movement is often visible sooner than ranking movement, though it varies by query and category. That is a working observation, not a benchmark. Sometimes a new page gets cited within weeks; sometimes it takes a full content cycle.
For teams that want the technical layer handled, our LLM SEO services cover the retrieval and quotability work, and the AI visibility audit gives you a baseline before you commit to a program. Pricing for GEO and SEO plans is listed on our GEO pricing page, as of September 2026.
What to do next
Start with one product line. Pick ten queries a buyer would actually type, run them through Google and ChatGPT, and note who gets cited. That gap tells you more than any strategy deck. Then fix the pages that should be winning but are not: add the definition paragraph, the FAQ, the schema, the internal link.
Google and ChatGPT are not competing for the same job. Google organizes the web. ChatGPT synthesizes it. Your job is to be legible to both, which mostly means writing clearly, structuring tightly, and checking the results in both places. If you want help setting that up, contact us and we will reply within 24 hours.
Frequently asked questions
Is ChatGPT better than Google for B2B research?
Not universally. ChatGPT is stronger for complex, sentence-shaped questions where the buyer wants a synthesized answer. Google is stronger for short keyword searches, local intent, price comparison and seeing many options at once. Most B2B buyers use both, often in the same session.
How is SEO different from AI search optimization?
SEO focuses on ranking a URL in search results. AI search optimization focuses on being the source an AI answer is built from. The same content can serve both, but AI answers reward self-contained, quotable paragraphs, clear definitions and structured data more than traditional ranking signals alone.
Can I track ChatGPT citations the way I track Google rankings?
No. Search Console does not show ChatGPT citations. The practical method is to check a fixed set of queries in ChatGPT search mode, not logged in, and screenshot the results weekly. Over a quarter, you can see which pages and competitors get cited.
Do I need separate content for Google and ChatGPT?
Usually not. One well-structured page can rank on Google and be quoted by ChatGPT. What changes is the formatting: Google rewards keyword alignment and internal links, while ChatGPT rewards a 60-word definition paragraph, a numbered step list and a clear FAQ block.
